Most people would call me crazy for having to leave a 7 figure business to start from “scratch” all over again
But I felt it was the right thing to do…
You see, i have spent 4 years of my life after university to go all in to building a agency business with brand new people i networked online with in Singapore.
we were young and full of aspirations when we started. And the main partner also had alot of experience building businesses + good amount of capital to start a new venture to improve our skills and also create new opportunities for us in the future
Building it was fun yet stressful as we didnt had the experience in management, hiring, leadership, the technical skills for media buying, copywriting werent great as well
we pressed on still and managed to scale to 7 figures in revenue and over 50+ clients within 4 years (not bad for my 1st real official business)
Now the reason why i left was basically because i didnt felt i could grow anymore in the agency and I wanted to stop trading so much time for money, because fundamentally an agency is a service based business which plays on the point that we are using systems and labour arbitrage to earn from our clients
If you want more on why I left my agency you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/Z3Ia7dvauhs
After I left, i decided to join my client, a trading education company in Singapore as a Chief marketing officer. The goal was to build a strong and lean team to scale the education / coaching business to 7+8 figures
I was already working with the company when I was in the agency and we brought them from
1m+/year to 5m+/year . I would’nt say everything was from our efforts in the agency but we did contribute significantly to the increase in revenue at that point of time.
I joined the company for the past 2 year and we had 30% increase in revenue for each year so far with the profit margins being super healthy >50%
So why did I made this decision? I felt that actually owning or partnering with bigger companies would allow me to learn the skills that are vastly different from running an agency serving clients of a certain revenue size.
This was very true, in the 2 years I have learnt way more than my 4 years in my agency and solve countless of different problems i would’nt have even though of…
The skills and experience i learnt from the agency definitely helped and i was able to skill stack to gain even more specialised skillset that complements on the vision and direction of my future growth path.
Right now I’m currently earning 2x higher than what I was doing before and this allowed me to really reap the benefits of that decision after 2 years.
As a CMO, I get to tackle task such as content systems, diversifying lead sources, analytics and KPI tracking , referral systems and more…
It has been a very fun and rewarding experience so far…
I’m motivated to write more to share my learnings and experiences scaling coaching and consulting companies into 8 figures and beyond.
Let me know what else you would like to learn about my experience as a CMO?
